Clean water in Koppányszántó is no fairy tale

2026. 03. 04.

There is a well-known tale about how essential salt is to everyday life. Perhaps no such fable has been written about water—simply because its importance is so obvious. Without water, there is no life.

Around 60% of the human body is made up of water. It is the very medium of our biological functioning. Our cells, our blood, and all metabolic processes depend on it. Nutrients dissolve in water to reach our cells, and waste products are carried away the same way. And it certainly matters what kind of water we drink. If water is contaminated, pathogens and toxins can enter the body directly—and the human body is highly sensitive to harmful microorganisms and toxic compounds.

Water is not only a daily necessity at the individual level; it is also a fundamental condition of civilization. When access to sufficient clean water is lacking, conflicts quickly arise between communities. Over time, we have developed an emotional and cultural bond with water. It represents the safety of home, care, health, and confidence in tomorrow.

When a municipality embarks on a water utility development project, it is far from ticking off a routine administrative task. It is working to ensure that its residents can live in good health, peace, and security.

This was precisely the guiding principle behind the investment in Koppányszántó. The drinking water quality improvement program in this settlement in Tolna County was implemented within the framework of EEEOP, with support from the European Union. The goal was to guarantee, in the long term, that the concentrations of arsenic, boron, fluoride, nitrite, and ammonium remain below the regulatory limits—meeting a key condition of the funding scheme.

The project focused on the village’s water treatment plant, which supplies the entire community with drinking water. Since only one of the two deep wells had been operating reliably over the long term, a new well with adequate capacity was drilled to ensure secure service provision.

In addition, modern water treatment technology was installed. A A new integrated water treatment system was constructed at the plant, with a capacity of 5 cubic meters per hour, designed to remove iron, manganese, and ammonium from the water. The development also included the construction of a new treatment building, a technical backup well, an outdoor basin, an iron sludge settling unit, the necessary internal pipeline network, and a service road.

Clean water in Koppányszántó is therefore not a matter of legend—it is the result of deliberate planning, responsible investment, and a commitment to safeguarding the health and future of the community.

As a result of the investment, the quality of drinking water in Koppányszántó now fully complies with both European Union and Hungarian regulatory standards.
