Development of educational infrastructure at Fényi Gyula Jesuit High School

2024. 10. 25.

In the Avas-south residential area of Miskolc, a church high school was established 25 years ago, which gained national fame for its novelty, educational standards, and vibrant community. Thanks to an EU funded project, two new sections of the flourishing school, equipped with the latest technology, have been realised: a multifunctional community space and a group of science laboratories and classrooms on the upper levels of the central building.

When, in the late 1980s, István Seregély, the Archbishop of Eger, and László Velkey, a professor from Miskolc, planned to establish a church educational and pastoral center in the Avas panel housing estate in Miskolc, many received the idea with skepticism. But fortunately, their idea became a reality, the Fényi Gyula Jesuit High School opened its doors and has been continuously expanding since its inception. In the high school – keeping in mind the educational and teaching work that shapes the whole person – modern science education and the teaching of humanities subjects, including foreign languages, are given special emphasis; at the same time, artistic education also plays a very important role. The institution, in response to the growing demands, also started a sports-oriented class five years ago.

However, as educational methods have changed over time, and the student body not only increased in number but also in educational demands, further developments became necessary for the infrastructure to meet the needs of the modern era. The Hungarian Province of the Society of Jesus has received a non-repayable grant for the development of the school’s educational infrastructure under the Human Resource Development Operational Programme. With the support and the involvement of other sources, the long-awaited expansion could be realised, and the two new sections of the school, equipped with the most modern technology, were named after the distinguished founders.

Since the institution did not have an auditorium or a large hall capable of accommodating the entire school, there has been a need for a larger internal space. As part of the project, a multifunctional community and conference hall was created in connection with the existing restaurant. On the roof of the building, there is a green terrace with a view of the Bükk Mountains, which is also accessible for events related to the church square. The central building, named after Saint Joseph, has been expanded with two additional floors. On its first new level, three science classrooms have been established with the necessary storerooms, modern lab tables, and equipment. On the second new floor, they built three classroom-sized workspaces, a community-purpose room, and an internal staircase to access the new levels. A new stair-climbing device is also available for the laboratory rooms, assisting in access for students with mobility impairments. Additionally, the institution has expanded its solar panel capacity, which reduces energy dependence and maintenance costs.

Thanks to the project, the institution can remain a key player in Hungarian public education for the next quarter-century.
