The Boldog István Sándor Catholic Primary School in Mezőnyárád — maintained by the Archdiocese of Eger since 2016 — has undergone a major transformation to create a modern, inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of the 21st century.
The school operates in two buildings: the original structure, built in the early 1900s, and a newer wing with a gymnasium added in 1991. Over the decades, both had deteriorated significantly. The flooring, heating system, restrooms, electrical wiring, and classrooms all needed renovation, and there was no dedicated modern science lab.
With co-funding from the European Union under the Human Resources Development Operational Programme, the project upgraded around 2,800 square metres of facilities. The main building’s roof was partially renewed, a new science lab and storeroom with full accessibility were built, the IT classroom was modernised, and several classrooms received new floors and refurbished doors. The teachers’ restroom was improved, the gym was fitted with a new sports floor and dividing curtain, and the changing rooms underwent a complete renovation. In the gym building, the interior doors were replaced, and the roof received new tiles and lathing.
Accessibility was a priority: safe, step-free access now connects all three buildings, and a fully accessible restroom was added. The heating pipes and electrical wiring were completely replaced. New educational, sports, and IT equipment, furniture, and kitchen appliances were purchased, and a solar panel system was installed to supply a significant share of the school’s energy from renewable sources.
The goal was to create a healthy, safe, inspiring, and modern environment that meets national education standards for years to come, while supporting high-quality, inclusive teaching. The improvements have made a real difference to the daily lives of students, teachers, and staff — and strengthened the school’s place at the heart of the community.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project EFOP-4.1.5-16-2017-00146 under the Human Resource Development Operational Programme.
