The establishment of a visitor center in Bugac, showcasing the area’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage, has been made possible by the financial support of the European Union. Visitors to this center can enjoy a comprehensive experience thanks to the extremely diverse program offerings, and appropriate education and knowledge acquisition related to the Kiskunság region are available for all age groups.
The central element of the project, the “Gateway to the Puszta” Information Center, is not just a reception building but a treasure trove filled with informative materials showcasing the products of local farmers. Visitors to this center can learn about the Natura 2000 areas, habitats, protected and strictly protected plant and animal species, as well as the cultural and ethnographic values of the region through a permanent exhibition while also enjoying the experiences of discovery and learning through play.
The two levels of the center each hide a special exhibition. Let’s start with the “Shepherd’s Life” exhibition in the basement, where the shepherds of the past tell us how they shaped the landscape and lived their daily lives surrounded by grey cattle and sheep. The impact of animal husbandry on the landscape is not just a historical curiosity but also a little ecological discovery: how a single farming decision influenced the wildlife of the sandy plains over the centuries. The ground floor, however, invites you on a truly captivating adventure. Here is the exhibition titled “Among the Bugac Sand Dunes,” where the animals and plants of the puszta take center stage. Imagine you are on a magical tour where the dunes, swarms of locusts, and rare plants tell a living story of why this place is so special. Put aside the short hiking trails and immerse yourself in the experience enriched with interactive elements!
In addition, the building provides opportunities for small groups to engage in nature education and ethnography-themed activities, as well as to hold conferences, training sessions, and meetings. Furthermore, nature trails and hiking routes ensure that a visitor to the area can gain a true sense of the puszta. The “Memory Path of the Sand Forests” helps to discover the most endangered sand forest associations. Meanwhile, the hiking trails showcase all the natural and cultural heritage of the village of Bugac.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project KEHOP-4.1.0-15-2016-00052 under the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme.
