Road development is picking up speed across the country

2026. 04. 21.

Getting to work faster, traveling to school more safely, or reaching a doctor or nearby town more easily—these are everyday needs. The Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme Plus (TSDOP Plus) is helping make them a reality through ongoing road improvements.

The program focuses on upgrading smaller, lower-tier roads—those four- and five-digit routes that connect villages and small towns to larger centers, workplaces, and industrial areas. They may not be the most visible roads, but they play a key role in daily life.

With support from the European Union, these upgrades are making travel quicker, safer, and more comfortable—whether you’re driving, cycling, or using public transport.

And the progress isn’t slowing down. Since 2010, more than 7,000 kilometers of Hungary’s roughly 30,000-kilometer road network, managed by The Hungarian Public Road Nonprofit Ltd., have been fully renewed. In 2026 alone, over 800 kilometers are set to be upgraded nationwide. Many of these projects are part of TSDOP Plus’s Sustainable Urban Development pillar, which places a strong emphasis on improving public transport infrastructure.

Importantly, TSDOP Plus isn’t just about major roads. It also supports improvements to local streets within towns and villages—the roads people use every day to get to schools, kindergartens, clinics, offices, and workplaces.

Since 2014, under TSDOP Plus and its predecessor program, nearly 1,000 projects have been launched, with total funding exceeding HUF 520 billion. So far, 921 kilometers of roads have been completed, and work is currently underway on more than 1,400 kilometers.

The result? Hundreds of communities across Hungary are already seeing the benefits—making everyday travel easier, safer, and more reliable.
