With Hungarian Grey Cattle for Biodiversity in the Bükk National Park

2025. 02. 19.

Whenever the topic of Hungarian grey cattle arises, Hortobágy and its renowned plains frequently spring to mind. However, this distinctive breed is not limited to these plains – a herd of 120 individuals lives in the Southern Heves Region. The enhancement of conditions and prospects for their maintenance, facilitated by European Union support, is of paramount importance for the preservation of the breed and the preservation of biodiversity.

The Southern Heves Region occupies a special place on Hungary’s conservation map not only due to the beauty of its landscape but also because of its commitment to environmentally conscious farming. The region has been at the forefront of applying sustainable conservation and farming practices for years. The various initiatives of the directorate, such as the cultivation of crops for bustard conservation and the grazing of grasslands, are closely aligned with the preservation of the ecologic balance of the region. In this regard, the continuously expanding herd of Hungarian grey cattle plays an important role. The animals contribute to preserving the natural vegetation and the local ecosystem through grazing while also helping to enrich the landscape structurally.

The development of a courtyard-like building complex necessary for the winter housing of animals, the storage of machinery and feed, and the accommodation of workers has been realized in the EU project. In addition to the stables and pens for the safe housing and care of the animals, the facilities for storing and maintaining machinery also assist the farmers in their work. The new feed and crop storage facilities ensure the uninterrupted winter feed supply for the animals. The development has improved farm efficiency, making the working conditions more comfortable for the professionals, thereby creating a better work environment.

The Hungarian grey cattle is not only a heritage of the past but also a key player in the present and future of the region. The developments ensured by the project make it possible for the goals of nature conservation and farming to remain in balance while the Southern Heves Region builds a sustainable future based on the region’s rich natural heritage.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project KEHOP-4.1.0-15-2016-00029 under the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme.
