Across the globe, the name Samsonite is synonymous with stylish, reliable travel luggage. What many don’t realize, however, is that the global brand’s Hungarian factory is also on a strong growth trajectory — thanks in part to support from the European Union.
Led by Samsonite-Hungária Bőrönd Kft., a groundbreaking project was launched to strengthen local industry, expand production capacity, and open the door for Hungarian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to join the global supplier network. The consortium included Plasticor Kft., Kresz & Fiedler Kft., Termoplast Kft., and Vertikal Group Nyrt., with all five companies united behind an ambitious goal: to scale up domestic production of injection-molded luggage components, enhance supplier capabilities, and make the entire local manufacturing chain more competitive.
In recent years, production at Samsonite’s Hungarian facility has grown rapidly. This upward trend has created a pressing need for reliable, responsive local suppliers. Reducing dependence on Far Eastern sourcing and instead working with nearby partners is a strategic priority for the company, allowing for greater flexibility and faster turnaround.
Thanks to EU funding, the project achieved major technological and organizational upgrades. Samsonite-Hungária Bőrönd Kft. introduced cutting-edge ISEC® EVO 102 Pelletising Plant technology, improving both efficiency and quality. The other consortium partners invested in advanced injection molding machines, tooling, assembly lines, and logistics equipment — all directly supporting luggage component production. Two companies built new production halls, while another introduced innovative assembly technology. All five partners modernized their IT systems, including new hardware and software, to boost digital operations, data management, and manufacturing performance.
Equally important were the organizational and skills-focused developments. Through consulting, training programs, and organizational development support, the project helped partners align with international supplier standards and foster collaboration that connects local strengths with global needs — paving the way for a more sustainable and competitive future.
The project not only brought a technological leap for all involved, but also positioned them to become long-term players in the global supply chain. Every element of this initiative was designed to ensure that Hungarian manufacturing doesn’t just keep up with international competition — it leads it.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project GINOP-1.3.3-16-2016-00001 under the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme Plus.
