The University of Pécs is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in our country, which, with the support of the Human Resources Development Operational Program (EFOP) and the involvement of EU funds, has implemented several successful measures to increase student and staff satisfaction, enhance the university’s competitiveness, improve the effectiveness of responses to labor market challenges, and improve access for female and disadvantaged students.
The university has outlined three key project goals for the period from 2017 to 2021 in line with its institutional development plan: the establishment of a unified university through strengthening integration among faculties, the development of an innovative university that responds well to socio-economic challenges, and the aspiration to become an international university. To achieve these goals, the training structure has been expanded and modernized, taking into account economic demands. Digitalization has also played a significant role. At the university, various specific developments have taken place across different faculties: for instance, in the field of medical and health sciences, alongside methodological renewal, an innovative educational environment has been created; in the spirit of sustainability, short-cycle training programs have been introduced in agricultural education; and the establishment of interconnected (joint) programs in economic sciences has been realized through the creation of a modern equipment base. As part of the project, a complex sports service and health education system has also been developed.
Beyond coordinating international relations in the Carpathian Basin, the university has succeeded in further integrating into the European Higher Education Area through institutional-level programs and activities, thereby enhancing its international role and strengthening its position on the global higher education map. To effectively implement a 21st-century, more inclusive higher education model, the university has introduced a module called HABIT (Intensive Support for Student Retention), which provides assistance to students coming from disadvantaged background so that they could successfully complete their studies and adapt to the changing labor market demands. Additional supportive measures have made it possible to increase the number of female and disadvantaged students in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields as well.
Thanks to the project, the University of Pécs has successfully enhanced its performance, stabilised its student enrollment by increasing its regional and educational coverage, improved the quality of its teaching and support resources, and established closer economic collaborations.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project EFOP-3.4.3-16-2016-00005 under the Human Resources Development Operational Programme.
